The facade of the former Stasi headquarters building is lit up with a light projection on Wednesday, November 6, to mark 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

After several weeks of protests, the government of East Germany announced on November 9, 1989, that East Germans would be allowed to travel abroad without previous onerous restrictions and permitted permanent emigration from all crossings.

This paved the way for a series of events that led to the official demolition of the Wall that started on June 13, 1990, and finally to German Reunification on October 3, 1990. The Berlin Wall came to symbolize the ‘Iron Curtain’, which separated physically and ideologically Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War.
