The graffiti attracted criticism on the internet, with some netizens posting pictures of other acts of vandalism committed in Hong Kong. At the start of the New Year, a pair of 80-year-old bronze lions outside the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank's headquarters were defaced. And the city's National Martyrs' Mausoleum was also targeted a day before last year's commemoration of Japan's wartime invasion.
