Dozens took to the streets of Derna in celebration on thursday night after forces loyal to Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), reportedly established control over the east Libyan city.

Haftar's declaration of victory came after intense fighting, as the port city has been surrounded by Haftar's forces since May this year and has come under repeated aerial bombardment, as it was held by the Derna Protection Forces (DPF), formerly known as the Derna Mujahideen Shura Council (DMSC).

Libya is split between the Tobruk-led government in the East, supported by the LNA, and the UN-recognised government in the West.
