At least eight patients were killed in a fire at a care home for the mentally ill in the Czech Republic on Sunday.
READ MORE: A spokesman for the regional rescue service said the fire in the northwestern town of Vejprty broke out before 5:00 am local time.
The town is on the border with Germany and German rescuers came to help their Czech colleagues who were not able to use helicopters due to bad weather conditions.
Most of the patients died from smoke inhalation, local officials said, adding that another 30 people were injured, one of them critically.
There were 35 patients and three staff members at the home at the time of the fire, officials said.
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis offered his condolences to the families of those who died. (AP)
