The jury in the Virginia murder trial of white nationalist James Alex Fields Jr. has heard closing statements. Reuters reports that prosecutors contended that the defendant was motivated by hatred when he drove his car into a crowd of counterprotesters last year murdering 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others, while the defense argued that Fields was fearfully reacting to a violent environment. If convicted, Fields could be sentenced to life in prison. He also faces eight other counts related to eight people injured in the crash, as well as one count of failing to stop at an accident involving a death.
