Hundreds of children and parents gathered at an Olympic venue in Tokyo on Monday in preparation for a ceremony marking one year until the 2020 games. The official mascot robots, Miraitowa and Someity, also appeared at the event.
The robots, developed by Toyota Motor Corp., have moving limbs and eyes that change to depict stars and hearts.
Miraitowa's name is based on a combination of the Japanese words Mirai (future) and Towa (eternity). The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic mascot is named Someity, which derives from the word Someiyoshino, a popular cherry blossom variety.
The official ceremony marking one year until the games will be held on Wednesday. The Tokyo Olympics will take place between July 24 and August 9 2020.
