More than 23 people are feared dead and dozens injured in a suspected arson attack at one the headquarters of an animation studio in Uji on Thursday.
Reports suggest a 41-year old man entered the Kyoto Animation Co. studio, at 10:30 local time (01:30 GMT) and poured a flammable liquid, suspected to be petrol, in several parts of the building before lighting it on fire. The perpetrator, who was also injured, has been taken into police custody.
Footage shows multiple fire engines and ambulances lining the street outside the three storey building where rescue efforts remain underway.
The company's headquarters is located in a residential area of Uji, a city to the south of Kyoto that forms part of the Greater Kyoto area.
