Exclusive footage filmed by Spencer Fehrenbacher, a US citizen quarantined on the Diamond Princess, shows the evacuation of US nationals from the cruise ship docked in Yokohama on Sunday.
Passengers being escorted out from the ship and being guided by medical staff wearing hazmat suits towards shuttle buses can be spotted on footage. Common areas inside the Diamond Princess were also filmed being remarkably empty, as the quarantine to the rest of the passengers is still in place.
According to the US Embassy in Japan, the passengers being evacuated will be screened for symptoms of coronavirus before boarding a US chartered flight heading either to Travis Air Force Base in California or Lackland Air Force Base in Texas for a 14-day quarantine.
The Diamond Princess Cruise Ship was quarantined when it arrived in Yokohama early last week after it emerged that some passengers who disembarked in Hong Kong last month tested positive for the flu-like respiratory illness. So far, 355 people from the ship have tested positive for the new virus that began in China, including 70 new cases found on Sunday.
According to the latest report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the novel coronavirus has claimed more than 1,600 lives and infected more than 69,000 worldwide.
