Record high tides and strong winds hit Venice on Tuesday submerging more than 70 percent of the Italian city.

Residents and tourists could be seen struggling to make their way in the flooded St. Mark's Square.

Winter flooding, dubbed "acqua alta" in Venice, meaning "high water", reached 187cm (73 inches) the highest level reached since 1966.
