Fans, footballers, family and friends gathered in Florence's main plaza on Thursday to bid farewell to Davide Astori, the 31-year-old Fiorentina captain who passed away on Sunday.
Thousands of well-wishers, including Juventus stars Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Barzagli and Claudio Marchisio, attended the two-hour-long funeral service in honour of Astori at the Basilica di Santa Croce in the Tuscan capital.
Fans cheered and chanted 'there's only one captain' as hearse carrying the deceased departed.
Astori had 14 caps for Italy and played as a central defender for some of the country's biggest clubs, including Roma and AC Milan.
The Lombard died unexpectedly following a cardiac arrest in a hotel room before his side's match with Udinese in the north-eastern Italian city of Udine.
