Footage from Ruptly taken on Monday explores Venice's iconic canals that have been left deserted and tranquil amid the coronavirus lockdown measures.
A gondola follows the normally busy narrow canals, taking stock of empty landmarks along the Venice Canal, including the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute (meaning St Mary of health) and the Rialto bridge. Emergency workers and the hospital on the water could also be seen.
The canals of Venice have made headlines multiple times over the past months due to its inability to cope with over-tourism, massive amounts of cruise ships and pollution. As Italy went into complete lock-down the coronavirus outbreak halted the influx of tourists to 'The Floating City.'
According to Johns Hopkins University, who compile data from the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), Italy is the third worst hit country with over 132,000 confirmed COVID-19 infections cases. The total number of infections worldwide has now surpassed 1.3 million.
