Flood warnings spread to Florence and Pisa on Monday after Venice was severely hit by floods three times last week, as heavy rain continues to affect central Italy.

Footage shows a swollen Arno river rushing under Florence's Ponte Vecchio. Florence residents fear a disaster similar to 1966, when some 100 people died and thousands of works of art were destroyed in floods.

Winter flooding, dubbed "acqua alta" in Venice, meaning "high water", reached 187cm (73 inches) last Tuesday, the highest level since the record of 194 cm set in 1966.
