A boat carrying 57 migrants was transferred to Italian coast guard rescue units after being intercepted by the Guardia di Finanza in the waters off the islet of Lampione, on Sunday.

All migrants on board were allowed to disembark at the Favarolo pier in Lampedusa before being transferred to Lampedusa reception centre, reports say.

Footage shows ambulance and police cars awaiting for the rescue boat to be docked before attending to migrants in need of medical assistance.

The rescue mission comes at a critical time in Italian politics, with Interior Minister Matteo Salvini refuse entry to migrants.
