“Baghouz has been liberated. The military victory against Daesh has been accomplished." That's what the spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces tweeted Saturday, declaring the “total elimination of the so-called caliphate" of the Islamic State. Reuters reports U.S.-backed forces said they had captured IS's last shred of territory in eastern Syria at Baghouz on Saturday. After years of fighting, made even more horrifying by a string of gruesome executions carried out by IS that the group broadcast online, the defeat ends the group’s self-proclaimed caliphate.
