Thousands of supporters took to the streets as Indian Prime Minister Narandra Modi began a two-day visit to his constituency in the state of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.

Footage shows Modi visiting the statue of independence figure Madan Mohan Malviya in front of thousands of supporters before driving his convoy through the streets of Varanasi.

Modi can then be seen waving to the crowd from his car as supporters cheer, throw flowers and scarfs and wave orange banners, the colour of his Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Indian general election is possibly the largest democratic election in history with more than 900 million Indians eligible to vote. Modi is seeking re-election to the Lok Sabha or lower house of India's parliament in order to remain Prime Minister.
