Thousands of Shia Muslims marked Ashura in the Indian city of Hyderabad on Tuesday.
Worshippers engaged in self-flagellation during a procession, in what is consider a symbolic act of mourning the killing of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in 680AD. The men chanted, beat their chests and whipped themselves with chains bearing blades, often until they bled.
Ashura falls on the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is usually marked with mourning rituals and passion plays re-enacting Hussein's martyrdom.
