A woman in southern Indian state of flood-stricken Kerala refused to leave here house on Saturday as rescuers would not allow her to bring her 25 dogs along with her.
Sunitha, who was left stranded in her flooded house in Thrissur, Kerala, had been taking care of her canine family for three years when the floods hit. "When the water levels rose, all my neighbours were taken to nearby schools and camps. When I asked the officials to rescue my dogs, they said they wouldn't. I told them that unless my dogs were rescued, I wouldn't leave," she said.
Sally Varma of the Humane Society International reached out to Sunitha and helped to organise a rescue. All 25 dogs were taken to a special shelter while waiting for flood waters to recede. Sunitha, her husband and her dogs have now all safely returned home.
