A drug’s inactive ingredients, make pills go down easier. According to Gizmodo, such ingredients can include dyes, sugars, and even foods. But a new study reveals the annoying, even life-threatening, side effects of a medication may not actually be caused by the drug itself. Instead, the inactive ingredient themselves could trigger a person’s allergies or intolerances. For example, an elderly person with a severe lactose intolerance could have a reaction from taking multiple medications on a daily basis. The authors noted that in more than half of the drugs studied contained at least one FODMAP--a group of sugars and carbs that have been linked to episodes of irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive problems.
