On its way to the coast of Florida, Hurricane Irma tore a path of destruction through the Caribbean, causing nearly catastrophic damage. The massive Category 5 storm, which battered the islands with near-record, sustained 185 mile per hour winds, affected an estimated 1.2 million people.

The deadly hurricane killed at least 44 people; 11 in the French territories, 10 in Cuba, five in the British Virgin Islands, five in the US Virgin Islands, four in Anguilla, four in St. Maarten, three in Puerto Rico, one in Haiti, and one in Barbuda. The amount of destruction was nearly complete, with the hardest hit islands seeing 99% of structures damaged in the storm.
