When Meek Mill was sent back to prison in 2017 for violating his probation, his case attracted national attention and outrage. But while Meek’s story might be unique because of his stature as a famous rapper, his battle with probation is familiar to many. The Philly rapper is one of 4.5 million Americans on probation or parole, which is twice the number of people incarcerated. His home state of Pennsylvania has the second-highest rate of residents on parole or probation in the country. Complex News Presents went to Philadelphia to meet with people who have dealt with the cycle of probation and now trying to change the system with Meek’s new organization, REFORM alliance.
