The total number of coronavirus infection cases confirmed in Hong Kong has risen to 14, an official from Hong Kong's Health Department said at a press conference in Hong Kong on Saturday.

The latest confirmed case was an "80 year old male patient" who was now in treatment, Department of Health official Chuang Shuk-kwan said.

Chuang said it could not be ruled out that the latest patient contracted the infection in Hong Kong. "The patient had been to mainland China for a few hours, it's not clear if he caught the virus in the railway station in mainland China or elsewhere, as he spent most of his time in Hong Kong," Chuang said.

The total number of cases confirmed by China stands at over 14,000, with 259 thought to have died from the disease. The new strain of coronavirus has spread from China to other countries, including the US, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Australia, Nepal, France and Germany. Cases were also reported in Taiwan, Canada, Japan, Malaysia and Vietnam.

On Sunday, the first coronavirus death outside of China was reported in the Philippines.
