The death of Holden has cast a pall across what's left of the Australian car industry.

The future of almost 200 dealerships is in doubt after GM's decision in Detroit to axe the Holden brand by next year.

The departure will likely spell the end of a long racing rivalry between Ford and Holden, with drivers and teams about to launch the Adelaide V8 season imagining a very different future.
