Thousands of teachers gathered outside parliament and government headquarters in Athens on Friday in protest against a new law changing how teachers are hired. Protesters clashed with police who used tear gas to disperse them as they tried to enter Parliament.

Footage shows violence breaking out between protesters and a group of riot police wielding batons.

The proposed law would set benchmarks for how teachers are appointed, which, they say, values diplomas over experience. In addition to the protest, thousands of teachers were on a 24-hour strike.

Security was especially tight in Athens due to German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit.
