Palestinians set ablaze the flag of Israel in front of the Israeli embassy in Athens on Wednesday, during a protest held to mark the 71st anniversary of Al Nakba Day.

Protesters rallied in front of the Israeli embassy in downtown Athens, where they chanted slogans for the 'freedom' of Palestine and burned flags of Israel in the presence of riot police forces.

Al Nakba or 'Day of Catastrophe' is marked every year on May 15 in commemoration of the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians before and after the establishment of Israel in 1948.

The anniversary comes amid rising tensions between Palestine and Israel, following cross-border hostilities which killed 25 Palestinians and four Israelis earlier this month.
