Supporters of the Greek New Democracy party celebrated the results of the European Parliament elections in Athens early on Monday, after the opposition party won 33 percent of the vote.

"Today is a very big day for us. We won with a percentage we could not imagine," said New Democracy MP Dora Bakoyannis.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras called for an early national election following the defeat of his Syriza party at the European Parliament elections on Sunday.
