German Chancellor Angela Merkel celebrated the recovery of the Greek economy and pronounced a new beginning in Greco-German relations on Thursday, her first visit to Athens since the controversial 2014 austerity programme imposed on the country at the height of the Euro crisis.

"I'm particularly happy to see that the situation has changed so much, unemployment has fallen," she said. "Of course it is not the end, if you will, of a period of reforms, but the beginning of a new situation."

Despite a government ban on protests, people were out on the streets in the capital to express their anger at the German Chancellor, who is blamed by many for inflicting economic hardship on the country.
