As many as 300 farmers used their tractors to block the highway leading from Athens to Thessaloniki in Nikaia on Monday, as part of a protest decrying the harsh economic conditions they claim to face in Greece.

Organized by the Panhellenic Roadblocks Committee, protesters denounced increased taxation and ineffective insurance policies among other things.

"With nation-wide coordination with dozens of roadblocks in Greece and thousands of tractors, we believe that we will bring up the extensive survival problems that we have," said one protester, adding that such actions were more likely to induce governmental reaction.

According to reports, the protesters are demanding minimum pricing to their products, the scrapping of value added taxes in order to reduce their production costs, and better pensions.
