Hundreds of left-wing demonstrators took to the streets of Athens on Thursday to denounce what they termed a US-backed coup in Venezuela and to declare their solidarity with the Venezuelan people.

"What's going on at Venezuela since these last days is an ongoing coup d'etat which has been after a long plan performed by the USA government as well as the European Union," said former Greek Alternate Minister of Finance Nadia Valavani.

"We would like to express our solidarity to Venezuelan people and the democratically elected President Nicolas Maduro. What happens in Venezuela is a coup," said activist Kostas Gousis.

Demonstrators marched from central Athens to the Parliament and the US Embassy, holding flags of Venezuela and chanting anti-imperialist, anti-EU and anti-US slogans.
