A piece of EU legislation describing Gibraltar as a 'British colony' sparked controversy and prompted an awkward exchange between Sky News reporter Dominic Waghorn and European Commission spokesperson Alexander Winterstein during a press conference in Brussels on Friday.

During the press conference, Waghorn questioned Winterstein on the EU’s position on Gibraltar’s disputed status, which Winterstein repeatedly dodges before turning off the reporter’s microphone.

The legislation, which includes a footnote describing Gibraltar as a 'colony', guarantees visa-free travel for Britons visiting the European Union for short stays after Brexit comes into effect, even in the case of no-deal.

Downing Street has called the description “completely unacceptable.”
