German Chancellor Angela Merkel dismissed speculation that she would seek election to a top EU job. She made the comments at a joint press conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in Berlin on Thursday.
"I am not available for any further political office, regardless of where it is - including in Europe," said Merkel.
The speculation emerged after a recent interview that Merkel gave to the newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, in which she talked about having "an elevated sense of responsibility" for Europe's future.
She specified that she gave that interview as the chancellor of Germany, and that it is fitting that she would "reinforce rather than the opposite, my efforts for a good and functional Europe."
Merkel also said that Germany will stick to their "security criteria" to decide which companies are to participate in the development of the 5G network, in reference to the recent US blacklisting of the Chinese network supplier Huawei over security concerns.
