German Chancellor Angela Merkel promised her new government will get to work as quickly possible after the longest period coalition-building in post-war Germany.

She promised to secure jobs and prosperity after securing her fourth government after the opposition Social Democrats (SPD) voted in favour of another grand coalition on Sunday.

She said: "With our coalition agreement we have a book full of missions and tasks we have to implement, looking at the people in Germany who are legitimately waiting for a government capable of acting. Almost six months after the elections they are entitled to see that something happens and we are doing something."
