German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian stated that the Franco-German friendship is in an “extraordinarily good state” and the working relationship “fruitful,” during a joint press event in Berlin on Wednesday.

The statement comes as the French FM visits Berlin to participate in a ministers’ cabinet meeting, before meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel later in the day.

The exchange of kind words came one day after the French Ambassador to Germany, Anne-Marie Descotes, sharply criticized the German arms export policy as unpredictable and demanded export guarantees for joint arms projects between the two nations.
