Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was sworn in as Germany's new Defence Minister during the special session of the German Federal Parliament in Berlin on Wednesday.

Her predecessor Ursula Von der Leyen, the President-elect of the European Commission, as well as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, were also present at the event.

"I will devote my strength to the welfare of the German people, increase its benefit, turn damage away from it, uphold and defend the Basic Law and the laws of the covenant, fulfill my duties conscientiously and exercise justice against everyone so help me God," swore Kramp-Karrenbauer in front of the German Parliament members and German Parliament President Wolfgang Schauble.

Schauble also congratulated Ursula Von der Leyen with her new position.
