The former CEO of Volkswagen Martin Winterkorn was charged with fraud for his role in the diesel emissions scandal that erupted in 2015, prosecutor Klaus Ziehe announced in the German city of Braunschweig on Monday.

Volkswagen made waves in 2015 when it was revealed that the carmaker had been installing software in their vehicles to conceal their true emissions level.

Prosecutors allege Winterkorn was aware of the manipulation of emission levels more than a year before the scandal broke.

Winterkorn was charged alongside five other executives. If found guilty, they could face up to ten years’ imprisonment.
