US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that China is a "national security risk to the United States of America" as well as to "Europe and western democracies around the world," while speaking outside the Villa Borsig in Berlin, following a meeting with his German counterpart Heiko Maas on Friday.
Maas and Pompeo discussed Iran, China, Russia, Ukraine and Venezuela, ahead of Pompeo's meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Pompeo also mentioned the USA's ban on Chinese tech firm Huawei, saying that Washington does not consider 5G technology safe.
Maas acknowledged Germany and the US have different views on Iran, but share the same goal: "We want that Iran doesn't come into possession of nuclear weapons", he said.
Addressing Syria, Pompeo stated that the US is planning a safer zone in the northern part of the country in an effort to reduce the risk of terror attacks on Turkey and avoid further tensions in the region.
The US Secretary of State is visiting Berlin after postponing a previously planned visit in early May, when he abruptly changed his schedule to visit Iraq amid rising tensions between the US and Iran.
