The European Union is more likely to agree to a Brexit extension of longer than the delay until June 30 requested by UK Prime Minister Theresa May, according to German Chancellor Angela Merkel speaking in the German Parliament on Wednesday.

"The extension may well be a longer extension than that requested by the UK Prime Minister," said Merkel before her departure for the emergency Brexit summit in Brussels later that day.

Once the UK has finalized the deal in its House of Commons, Merkel acknowledged, it will be able to withdraw in a quick and orderly manner at an earlier time as well.

While May is seeking to secure an extension until June 30, the EU will reportedly only agree to a longer delay, possibly until the end of 2019.
