German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that Germany "completely" supports the Irish position regarding its border with Northern Ireland. She was speaking to the press, during a visit from Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, to Berlin, on Tuesday.

Merkel welcomed the progress in the Brexit negotiations but was aware of the "many problems" that have been raised, notably that of the possible creation of a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
