Public transportation was severely reduced in Paris on Thursday as the city's transport company took steps to cut the frequency and number of services in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Footage shows several metro stations closed entirely and generally quiet streets as residents were left with few means to get around.

With France already under lockdown, it is not permitted for residents to leave their homes except to access essential services, and transportation has remained active mainly to allow those required to work to have a reliable method of transit, according to the RATP Group, Paris's state-owned public transport provider.

France has over 25,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with more than 1,300 deaths as of Thursday.
