llich Ramirez Sanchez, better known as 'Carlos the Jackal' returned to a Paris court on Monday to appeal a life jail sentence for the 1974 Paris shopping arcade attack which left two people dead and 32 injured.
Venezuelan-born Sanchez is already serving two life sentences for his role in attacks which left 11 people dead in 1982-83.
Sanchez's lawyer and wife, Isabelle Coutant-Peyre demanded his extradition to Venezuela saying, "I do not understand that the French state that expels all illegal immigrants wants to keep the most famous illegal immigrant for 23 years."
She had previously called the whole prosecution procedure "illegal and useless."
Helene Uzan, the lawyer representing victims said that, "[The victims’] suffering even if it is 40 years old is still very fresh in their memory and we really hope that this time we can turn the page, that there will be a real condemnation and we can move on."
Sanchez joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) in 1970 and was one the world's most wanted fugitives before his 1994 arrest and detention.
