The first commercial floating wind farm has exceeded expectations. Hywind, about 15 miles off the coast of Aberdeenshire, Scotland in the North Sea, went online in October. Built by Norwegian conglomerate Statoil, the six turbines generate 30MW of power. Over the last three months, it has operated at 65 percent capacity factor. By comparison, the U.S. Energy Department says solar photovoltaic generation averaged 27 percent in 2017 A Statoil spokesperson says, “Optimized design, larger and more efficient turbines, technology development, and larger wind parks will drive down costs, improve infrastructure and logistics.”
