Experimental Vaccine Could Block Opioid High

According to UPI, a new vaccine that could prevent people from getting high on opioids is in the trial stages. A team of scientists and researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University is developing an immunotherapy that would enable patients to develop antibodies that block heroin or fentanyl from reaching their brain.

Because opioids don't normally cause an immune response, the researchers attached them to the tetanus vaccine, which then engages the bodies immune system. The antibodies that are then produced, prevent opioid molecules from reaching the brain.
