Live from the Valley of the Fallen near Madrid with the exhumation of the remains of Francisco Franco.
The exhumation comes after the Spanish Supreme Court’s decision on the case back on September 24. The verdict follows a year-long judicial battle between the caretaker Socialist government Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and the family of Franco, who sought to block the exhumation. Sanchez first announced his intention to move the former dictator to another cemetery shortly after he took power in 2018. His remains are set to be taken to El Pardo-Mingorrubio cemetery, where his wife is buried.
The Valley of the Fallen monument was built by Franco following the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Over 33,000 victims of the conflict lie there. Franco was the Spanish head of state from the end of the Civil War in 1939 until his death in 1975.
