Areas of Chile were placed on red alert, Monday, November 18, due to forest fires near the port of Valparaiso. The fires have burned more than 3,600 hectares of land and destroyed at least eight houses, according to local media. Firefighters worked in the area as residents tried to salvage as many belongings as they could.

Chile's emergency service Onemi called for the evacuation of residents living in the towns of Rodelillo and Cincel, due to fires raging on the side of a hill. Authorities have said they suspect arson.

High temperatures and strong winds contributed to the proliferation of the fires in what is one of the most visited areas of Chile. In 2014, forest fires in the country killed 15 people and destroyed more than 2,000 homes. (Reuters)
