US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reassured its allies that Washington remains committed to "the complete dismantling of the ISIS threat" as it prepares to withdraw its troops from Syria. He made the statement during a keynote speech at the American University in Cairo on Thursday.
Pompeo stressed that the US "will not retreat until the terror fight is over," noting that "our airstrikes in the [Middle East] region will continue as targets arise."
Pompeo's trip to Egypt comes amid criticism over Washington's decision to withdraw troops from Syria.
On December 20, US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of roughly 2,000 US troops from Syria, in what is seen an abrupt shift of US Middle East policy.
