A police officer was killed and two wounded by an explosion near a Cairo church on Saturday night, according to reports, two days before the Coptic Christmas celebrated by Egypt's Christians.

The blast occurred as police were reportedly defusing an explosive device found near a church in the Nasr City district of the Egyptian capital.

Coptic Christians, who constitute around 10 percent of Egypt's population, have been targeted in a series of attacks in recent years.
