Don't Worry, The Pope Still Believes In Hell

The Vatican has clarified a tantalizing bit of reported speech from the Pope in a left-leaning Italian newspaper. According to BuzzFeed News, the 93-year-old founder of "La Repubblica" had an informal interview with the Pope, which he admits he neither recorded nor take notes on. When he wrote up his recollection of the conversation, he claimed the Pope said that hell did not exist. The Holy See press office called the article "the fruit of reconstruction" and that "no quotations ... should be considered as a faithful transcription of the words of the Holy Father." In numerous other public messages, the Pope has made explicit reference to the existence of hell. In a 2014 vigil for victims of Mafia violence, the pope begged members of the Mafia to repent or face eternal damnation.
