On Thursday, President Donald Trump approved new steel and aluminum tariffs. Trump made this decision despite controversy over the plans to impose the new trade penalties. Trump said in the White House Roosevelt Room, standing beside steel and aluminum workers, "Today, I'm defending America's national security by placing tariffs on foreign imports of steel." The tariffs will be 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on imported aluminum. They will take effect on March 23rd. The news has riled many lawmakers, U.S trade partners and those in Trump’s own White House. Trump said that countries may seek exemptions in the coming weeks.
