Donald Tusk, an outgoing European Council president, was elected European People's Party (EPP) President in Zagreb on Wednesday. Tusk was the only candidate for the role.

Speaking at the EPP Congress ahead of the vote, Tusk vowed to fight against what he branded as "irresponsible populism."

"Under no circumstances, can we give away the sphere of security and order to political populists, manipulators and autocrats, who lead people to believe that freedom cannot be reconciled with security," stated Tusk.

He added, "I am ready to fight, and I hope you are too."

Around 2,000 delegates from more than 40 countries attended the congress, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen.

The centre-right EPP is the largest political grouping in the European Parliament.
