Gina Haspel has been appointed by President Donald Trump as the new head of the CIA. Haspel is a longtime intelligence officer who ran a secret US prison in Thailand. At the prison, American intelligence officers regularly tortured people suspected of being affiliated with al-Qaeda. The use of so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques” during the Bush administration has been widely condemned by human rights groups. Haspel has spent more than three decades in US intelligence, most of it spent undercover and overseas. Haspel will be the first woman to lead the spy agency, where she is currently second in command. The current CIA director Mike Pompeo will replace Rex Tillerson for his role as Secretary of State.
