Eleven people died and four were injured in an explosion at a coal mine in Cucunuba on Saturday.

An investigation has been launched into the causes of the incident, with one theory being that it may have occurred due to a build up of methane gas and coal dust, according to Captain Alvaro Farfan of the Cundinamarca Fire Department.

Miners were working at the mine despite the coronavirus quarantine since their activity is considered "necessary" by law.

Tina Herrera, director of the Cundinamarca Risk Management Unit, stated that "the National Mining Agency has made a decision to close all mines in the municipality of Cucunuba until the quarantine ends, since we are in the process of the COVID-19 [outbreak]."
